Understanding the Role
of a Psychiatric Mental
Health Nurse Practitioner
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners, or PMHNPs, are advanced practice providers who are trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions. Their scope of practice includes psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, medication management, treatment planning, and supportive therapeutic interventions.
While some PMHNPs incorporate therapy techniques into their visits, they should not automatically be considered a replacement for a dedicated psychotherapist. For patients whose primary goal is ongoing, in-depth therapy, or for those who do not wish to pursue medication, working with a licensed therapist may be the most appropriate option.
In many cases, the strongest treatment approach includes both a psychiatric provider and a therapist working together as part of the patient’s care team. Our providers can help determine when a separate therapist may be beneficial and can support a collaborative approach based on each patient’s individual needs and treatment goals.

"I've built a team of practitioners who share a common belief in relationship-centered
care. We bring extensive clinical experience, but more importantly, we bring a genuine
desire to listen and understand your unique story."
— Nichole McLeod, PMHNP-BC, Owner
